Abstract
Nearly all signal analysis models work from the principle of first extracting a low-dimensional representation of the signal. In generative models in particular, this representation is derived through auto-encoder style frameworks which are trained to reconstruct the signal. We show that such representations must ideally learn low-dimensional projections, and that furthermore, by definition, these must be idempotent, whereas in reality the models may not learn them at all. By enforcing these idempotence constraints, we obtain much more stable representations that enable realistic manipulation and editing. Enabled downstream applications include enhanced image editing, speech synthesis and manipulation.
